Growth Hacking With PR with Gregory Galant of Muck Rack and The Shorty Awards

This post is by MPD from @MPD - Medium

On this week’s episode I chat with Gregory Galant, the Co-Founder and CEO of Muck Rack and the Co-Founder and CEO of The Shorty Awards.

Muck Rack is a Public Relations management platform that helps organizations find the right journalists to pitch, report on media coverage and prove the value of their work.

Greg has been in the NY startup game for a long time. He famously launched The Shorty Awards where they gave out awards for the best tweets in the early days of Twitter. Along the way he tinkered with a dozen business ideas until Muck Rack finally hit and took him to the moon.

During our chat we talk about Muck Rack, the PR industry and his wisdom about entrepreneurship. Enjoy.

Podcasts had a bumper 2020

From a billion-dollar valuation for social Internet’s “it” startup, Clubhouse to billionaire Mark Cuban co-founding his own version of a live “fireside chat” app, audio is the new hotness. Amidst all the hubbub, it is easy to think of podcasting as an old fuddy-duddy — which is ironic given that podcasting had its best year ever in 2020.

A full analysis of the year in podcasting is available over on Chartable, the podcasting analytics platform. Jam-packed with facts, figures, and smart analysis, the write-up is well worth reading. Here are some highlights:

  • There were 17,000 new podcasts started each week in 2020, totaling roughly 900,000 by the end of the year.
  • Half of those new podcasts are in English, but other languages are growing fast — led by Hindi, Chinese, and Portuguese.
  • Monthly downloads increased by 180 percent.
  • Chartable says it is seeing 1.2 billion downloads per month just for the 13,000 podcasts it monitors. The actual total is much larger.
  • Ad revenues are up by 15 percent.
  • Each week in 2020, about 160 new advertisers put dollars to work in podcasts.
  • Not surprisingly, corporations are starting to take over. The top five in the U.S. are Amazon, Entercom, iHeartMedia, Spotify, and NPR.

Last year, I wrote about the growth of podcasts, pointing out that the situation “reminds me of the blogging boom — in the early days, a few dozen blogs at the top made a lot of money, while the rest (Read more...)

The All In Podcast and Syndicate

This post is by Jason Calacanis from Jason Calacanis

A couple of months ago my pal Chamath texted me and said “I want to do a podcast with me and you.”

We discussed some names and landed on “All In,” as a tribute to our mutual friendship over poker. This was during the pandemic and in an election year, so there was plenty to talk about above and beyond technology, finance, and entrepreneurship, so we had a full docket of issues to work from.

We invited two other poker buddies to come on the pod, David Sacks and David Friedberg, and got into a quick rhythm given the massive brainpower of the two Davids.

We’ve now done 14 episodes and the podcast quickly went from the top 50 to 25 and then top three technology podcasts on Apple’s quirky podcast rankings.

People have responded in a deep and meaningful way to the podcast, tell us that it’s their favorite listen when we drop an episode every couple of weeks. People say they love the friendship and comradery they feel as we laugh it up while discussing and debating the most important issues of our time.

Fans tell me they wish the rest of the media world was more like the All In podcast, where folks listen and appreciate each other–even when they disagree. In fact, I think we appreciate each other MORE when we disagree, because it feels like we’re learning, evolving or simply getting to some central truths.

Anyway, I’m not sure if many of you come (Read more...)
