Jack Dorsey’s two companies— Twitter Inc. and Square Inc.—will finally be working together.

Soon, Twitter users will be able to make donations to political campaigns directly from the social media app. Square, the digital payments startup, will be providing the technology to get users’ cash into campaign coffers, the companies said Tuesday.

The exclusive tie-up marks the first partnership between the two companies that Mr. Dorsey has co-founded and simultaneously runs. Mr. Dorsey has been filling in as Twitter’s interim chief executive since July while the board searches for a permanent leader, a search in which Mr. Dorsey is considered a leading candidate.

Over the years, Twitter has become an integral part of political campaigns. Most, if not all, candidates have a presence on Twitter, using it as much for off-the-cuff remarks about their opponents as do to push their policies and reach out to voters. It only makes sense they’d be eager for a way to collect donations through Twitter as well.
