Fred DeLuca’s “Pizza Marines”: Robert McFadden on untimely death of Fred DeLuca, the co-founder of Subway, at age 67:
His first sandwich shop, named Pete’s Submarines to acknowledge the loan from his friend Peter Buck, was not a success. Its name had to be changed after his local radio advertisements, delivered in his native Brooklyn accent, confused many listeners, who thought he was saying “Pizza Marines.”
While Subway has been unfortunately and perhaps irrevocably tainted by their awful pitchman scandal, it’s easy to forget just how amazing of a business DeLuca built. More franchises than McDonald’s. And the entire company is still privately-owned, making DeLuca, of course, a billionaire a few times over.
